AFWAL-TR-87-3069 (VOL. III - MODAL PARAMETER ESTIMATION), TECHNICAL REPORT: EXPERIMENTAL MODAL ANALYSIS AND DYNAMIC COMPONENT SYNTHESIS (DEC-1987)., This report reviews and develop the theoretical basis for all of the modal parameter estimation
algorithms in use today. Several new multiple reference methods are included. The methods
reviewed include the Least Squares Complex Exponential, Polyreference Time Domain,
Polyreference Frequency Domain, Multiple Reference Orthogonal Polynomial, Multiple Reference
Ibrahim Time Domain, and the Multi MAC algorithms. In a comparison of these methods, the \'
6 ability to estimate modal parameters is essentially the same. In general, the time domain methods are
numerically more stable for large frequency bandwidths or for large numbers of modes. The
frequency domain methods are superior when residual effects of modes above or below the frequency
range of interest need to be included.
