MSFC-STD-3598, MSFC TECHNICAL STANDARD: STANDARD FOR FOREIGN OBJECT DAMAGE/FOREIGN OBJECT DEBRIS (FOD) PREVENTION (11-AUG-2012)., This standard sets forth the requirements and standard practices for Foreign Object Damage/Foreign Object Debris (FOD) Prevention for Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) and the Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF). This document establishes a standard to prevent foreign object damage and impact damage to products and hardware being designed, developed, manufactured, assembled, tested, operated, repaired, modified, refurbished, and maintained for MSFC. Most FOD can be attributed to poor housekeeping, facilities deterioration, improper maintenance, careless assembly, or inadequate operational practices. An effective FOD prevention program identifies potential problems, corrects negative factors, promotes awareness, provides for effective employee training, and uses “lessons learned” for continual improvement. The objective of this FOD prevention standard is to prevent (1) damage to critical program items, including but not limited to unique tooling, test hardware, ground support equipment, and flight hardware; (2) injury to the flight crew by FOD entrapped within manned flight articles; and (3) damage from FOD to other National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) assets.
