MIL-STD-188/172, MILITARY STANDARD: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, INTERFACE STANDARD, INTEROPERABILITY STANDARDS FOR INFORMATION AND RECORD TRAFFIC EXCHANGE MODE II (7 DEC 1989) [S/S MIL-STD-188-116/2] [NO S/S DOCUMENT]., The purpose of this document is to ensure interoperability and to promote commonality of communications equipment and subsystems using the Mode II channel coordination procedure. An additional objective is to prevent proliferation of equipment performing the same or similar functions. The variety of equipment shall be the minimum necessary to support the missions of the armed forces in accordance with Department of Defense Directive 4630.5, Compatibility and Interoperability of Tactical Command, Control, Communications, and Intelligence Systems. This document specifies the minimum requirements necessary to implement information and record traffic exchange among data communications systems employed in long haul and tactical communications networks. It is not the intent of this document to specify any pa~icular hardware or software design or implementation. Message formats are not specified in this document.
